Two teens were injured when their car collided with a piece of farm equipment north of Winthrop Tuesday.
The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office says the car was southbound on Slater Avenue near 200th Street when it struck a northbound farm combine nearly head-on shortly before 4:30 pm.
The car’s driver, a 17-year old male, was extricated from the car and airlifted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City with serious injuries. A passenger in the car, a 15-year old female, was transported to Buchanan County Health Center in Independence with minor injuries. Their names have not been released.
The driver of the combine, Donald Cook of Lamont, was treated and released at the scene.
The road was closed for about 45 minutes due to the accident, with traffic temporarily re-routed.
The accident remains under investigation.
