Wrestling is typically know as an individual sport, but for this year’s West Delaware wrestling team the focus will be just the opposite, team. The Hawks kicked off practice on Monday and are coming off of a 17-4 dual meet record and a 3rd place finish in last year’s state duals and will return plenty of experience from last season along with welcoming in a talented batch of newcomers. They have five returning state qualifiers back including two state place winners in senior Mitchel Mangold who finished 3rd as a sophomore and 5th last season, and junior Jack Neuhaus who placed 7th. In past years West Delaware head coach Jeff Voss who enters his 24th season at the helm for the Hawks would rely on those guys to lead with their experience, but this season Voss wants the experienced wrestlers to come in with a different mentality:
The Hawks had four 1st place tournament finished last season and Voss says that setting team goals and being committed to those goals is where the team aspect of this year will factor in:
Along with the returning state qualifiers the Hawks return 12 wrestlers who have had significant varsity experience, and with only 14 spots available in the varsity lineup and a good group of freshmen coming in there will be a lot of good competition in the wrestling room with kids battling for those varsity positions:
West Delaware opens its season on the road on November 29th as they will take on Waverly-Shell Rock before hosting the Bob Murphy Invitational on December 1st.
