HS Wrestling: West Delaware Defeats Solon In WaMaC Dual Opener

After the West Delaware and Solon wrestling teams had impressive finishes in their tournaments last Saturday, the dual meet between WaMaC Conference foes Thursday night had all of the makings to be a great dual. Both teams are coming off of state dual appearances last season and plenty of experience back from those teams, but on Thursday night the Hawks came out looking for pins as senior Jordan Bries started the dual meet with a fall over Adam Bock to give them a 6-0 lead. Solon tied the dual after 4th ranked Mike Hoyle pinned Ben Petlon, but the West Delaware rattled off four straight falls from Carson Petlon, Blake Engel, Luke Farmer, and Evan Woods to give the Hawks a 30-6 lead. Solon picked up a fall at 126 pounds as Hayden Taylor pinned Reilly Dolan, but 7th ranked senior Ryan Phillips answered as he knocked off 4th ranked Zeb Gnida 4-3, which was followed by back-to-back pins from Jadyn Peyton and Cael Meyer to put the Hawks up 45-12. The two teams then split the final four matches giving the Hawks the 51-18 dual victory as they recorded seven falls and won 10 of the 14 matches. West Delaware head coach Jeff Voss thought his team wrestled very well in winning some of the matches he thought could go either way:

The Hawks will return to action tomorrow at the South Winneshiek tournament, a meet they started going to a couple of years ago that features some of the best teams and individuals in class 1A and 2A and Voss says it’s another opportunity to see where his team is early on in the season:

Coverage of the South Winneshiek Invitational gets underway tomorrow at 10:00 am on KMCH.com and will go live on Mix 94.7 starting with the semifinals, as Roger Reed and Jamie Vaske will bring you all of the hold-by-hold coverage.
