HS Wrestling: West Delaware Sweeps WaMaC Double Dual

The 4th ranked West Delaware wrestling team swept a WaMaC conference double dual in Dyersville last night as they defeated Mount Vernon 49-13 and Beckman. In the win against Mount Vernon the Hawks jumped out to a 31-0 lead with six straight wins including four falls and a major decision. Mount Vernon got on the board with a win in the featured bout of the night at 170 pounds as West Delaware freshman Wyatt Voelker gave top ranked Paul Ryan everything he could handle as Voelker broke a scoreless tie with an escape in the second period, but Ryan answered with a take down to take a 2-1 lead and with time winding down Voelker added another escape to tie the match 2-2 going into the 3rd period. In the 3rd Ryan picked up an escape and with short time in the match Voelker took a shot which resulted in a scramble that Ryan had to fight off and hold on to win the first match for Mount Vernon 3-2 as the Hawks led 31-3. West Delaware would win the four out of the final seven matches and won the dual 49-13. In the final dual between the Hawks and the Blazers it was pin or be pinned as the meet lasted only 21 minutes and in the 14 weight classes there was a fall in all but one as the Hawks won 12 matches with 11 pins while Beckman won two matches by fall. West Delaware improves their record to 3-1 and 3-0 in the WaMaC east, while Beckman drops to 3-4 and 2-3 as they also fell to Mount Vernon 51-27 and will head to Troy Mills on Saturday for the North Linn Invitational.
