Oelwein Man Arrested after Assaulting Deputy

An Oelwein man has been taken into custody after assaulting a deputy this week.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office says they had first received a call of a suspicious vehicle and a domestic assault in the Arlington area on Sunday night. Deputies arrived on the scene and after investigating, they discovered 39-year old Joshua Freedom Smith of Oelwein was driving in the Arlington area under a barred license. A further investigation showed that Smith was wanted out of Buchanan County for a Parole Violation Warrant.

Later in the evening, Smith fled from authorities after assaulting a deputy who was trying to make an arrest in the Maynard area.

He was taken into custody on Monday at a home in Oelwein following further investigation.

Smith faces several charges, including Assault on a Peace Officer. He is being held without bond. If convicted, he could face up to eight years in prison.
