The family of Jerry Burns released a statement on Saturday following the Manchester man’s arrest earlier in the week. Burns has been charged with murder in the death of Michelle Martinko, who was 18 years old when she was found stabbed to death in the parking lot of Westdale Mall just after 4:00 a.m. on December 20, 1979. DNA evidence pointed to Burns after a lengthy investigation.
The statement reads: The family of Jerry Burns would like to thank our friends and the Manchester community for the support we have received since Jerry’s arrest. We would also like to extend our sympathy to the Martinko family. The charge against Jerry comes as a complete shock to us and we are doing our best to carry on with our lives. During this difficult time and as the justice system runs its course we ask that our privacy be respected.
Burns’ preliminary hearing has been set for this Friday
