The final wrestling meets before the postseason took place on Saturday with teams wrestling in their conference tournaments, and here is a look at how our area teams finished.
In Van Horne: West Delaware had one champion and scored the second most team points in WaMaC tournament history on their way to the tournament title as they scored 274.5 team points which was 54.5 points better than 2nd place Solon at Benton Community high school. The Hawks had seven wrestlers reach the championship match and junior 182 pounder Jack Neuhaus was the lone champion as he defeated Seamus Poynton of Solon 5-2 in the finals. Independence finished in 4th place with 155.5 team points and had three individual champions as freshman Isaiah Weber won the 113 pound title with a 10-7 win over Cole Whitehead of Center Point-Urbana in finals. Junior Cole Davis picked up a 7-2 win over Jared Voss of West Delaware to win the 160 pound title, and senior Drew Evans scored a takedown in overtime to defeat Carson Petlon of West Delaware 3-1 to claim the title at heavyweight. Beckman finished in 8th place and had one champion as senior Owen Grover won the tournament at 195 pounds with a 7-0 win over Jordan Bries of West Delaware in the finals. In Winthrop: East Buchanan scored 151 points on their way to a runner-up finish as they hosted the Tri-Rivers conference tournament finishing behind 1st place Lisbon. The Buccaneers had two champions as senior James Mossman picked up a 13-3 major decision over Max Kohl of Lisbon in the 160 pound final, and fellow senior Taylor Fox pinned Hunter Shoaff of Midland to win the heavyweight title. North Linn finished 3rd as they were led by senior Brady Henderson had two falls including one over Gage McCoy of Lisbon in the finals to win the 152 pound title, senior Quinton Rechkemmer defeated top seed Cole Clark of Lisbon 7-3 in the finals to win the title at 182 pounds. Maquoketa Valley finished in 5th place and were led by sophomore Evan Elgin who finished 2nd at 195 pounds after losing 9-1 in the finals to Kanan Morris of Alburnett. Ed-Co finished in 6th place and were led by senior Dayne Bergan who won the 120 pound title with a fall over Cole Silver of Central City in the championship match. Starmont finished in 8th place and were led by freshman Bowen Munger who finished 2nd after losing by fall to Robert Avila Jr. of Lisbon in the 126 pound final. For complete results click HERE.
In Clarence: Monticello finished 4th at the River Valley conference tournament which was won by West Liberty at North Cedar high school. The Panthers had four wrestlers reach the finals and had two champions as senior Lake Stahlberg won 5-1 over Kobe Simon of West Liberty to win the 220 pound title, and senior Wade Picray defeated Connor Anderson of Anamosa 7-4 to claim the top spot at heavyweight. Cascade finished in 6th place as they two champions in sophomore Aidan Noonan who had three falls including a fall in the finals at 113 pounds where he pinned Owen Ray of Monticello, and senior Nolan Noonan won the 132 pound title by defeated Talen Dengler of West Liberty with a 9-0 major decision. Anamosa finished 8th and were led by Connor Anderson who finished 2nd at heavyweight. For complete results click HERE.
In Iowa City: Western Dubuque finished in 4th place in their first ever Mississippi Valley conference tournament held at Iowa City West high school. The Bobcats had five wrestlers in the finals and had two champions as it was senior Ryker Kurimski at 160 pounds who became the school’s first ever MVC champion with a 22-10 major decision over Brandon Lalla of Iowa City High, and junior Jake Hosch followed with a 5-2 win over Ryan Plummer of Linn Mar to win the title at 170 pounds.
