A fire broke out at the ethanol plant east of Fairbank on Wednesday afternoon.
The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office says one silo was affected at Flint Hills Resources. Crews were pumping liquid nitrogen into the silo, trying to knock down the flames.
Crews were on the scene through the night. Along with the Buchanan County and Fayette County Sheriff’s Offices, firefighters from Fairbank and Independence responded, as well as Buchanan County Emergency Management personnel.
Authorities say there was no risk of explosion at the plant, but the public was asked to stay away so emergency vehicles could get to and from the scene without traffic congestion. Highway 281 in front of the plant remained open.
No other details were immediately available.
