The West Delaware Hawks Boys Basketball team turned around a first quarter deficit after getting down 6-0 but fought back and went on to outscore Davenport Assumption the rest of the way for a 66-59 victory to capture the Substate 3 Final inside the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids. The quick moving contest lasted one hour and twelve minutes and saw three ties and only one lead change-that was the Hawks taking the lead for the first time with seven minutes to play in the third quarter. Senior Derek Krogmann led the way with 27 points despite have zero in the third period, he gathered double digit rebounds as well for his 18th double-double this season and 61st of his career. Krogmann shares the credit for the dominating second half performance:
Senior Gavin Soppe tallied a career high 20 points including four 3-pointers. Sophomores Logan Woellert and Kyle Kelley added 12 and 7 respectively. Kelley who played a good majority of the night despite battling through flu-like symptoms, talked about what the feeling of making it to the State Tournament means to him and his team:
The win was the first ever for the WD Boys program over Assumption in the second meeting. The first was a 77-63 victory for the Knights in the Class 3A State Championship tilt at Veterans Auditorium in Des Moines in early March of 2000. Hawks sixth-year head coach Matt Uthoff, who was a senior on that team describes just how proud he was in his players for their determined effort all night long:

The Hawks advance to the 2019 Boys Basketball State Tournament next week in Des Moines, the program’s 2nd appearance in 3 years and fifth all-time dating back to 1999. WD will play their first round game next Tuesday March, 5th at either 11:15am, 1pm, 2:45pm or 4:30pm. The pairings will be released in the next couple of days.
One other WaMaC Conference Boys 3A team qualified for State last night. In the nightcap at the Cell Center, Marion ended Maquoketa’s memorable season 41-38 after being down by 6 halfway through the 4th quarter. Tonight Class 4A Substate games will take place.
The Girls State Tourney began yesterday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines with Class 5A and 3A schools in action.
