Is it time to take the Delaware County Rec Center to the next level?
The idea was presented to the Delaware County Board of Supervisors at their meeting on Monday afternoon.
Manchester Good to Great Chairperson Wes Schulte, who led the presentation, says fitness, wellness and recreation are important in every community. And while the Rec Center has fulfilled its original vision, it’s time to raise the bar and provide more activities for Manchester and Delaware County residents. He’s proposing a complete reorganization of the Rec Center, including better use of the land, with possible partnership from several Manchester and Delaware County entities.
Representatives from those entities sat in on Monday’s discussion, including the Rec Center Board, Regional Medical Center, the City of Manchester, the Manchester Chamber, Delaware County Economic Development, Delaware County Tourism, the Delaware County Fair Society and the West Delaware School District. While this idea is in the initial stages and they are still trying to gathering information about this proposal themselves, they say it’s an idea they could potentially support.
Ideas for upgrading the Rec Center include adding a large turf field for football and soccer, a yoga and dance studio, a full fitness center, a youth center and a community room. Schulte says an indoor pool is likely not financially feasible and therefore is NOT envisioned as part of the potential plans.
However, it’s up to the County on how to proceed. The County owns the building and the land. Supervisor Shirley Helmrichs says they actually asked some of these entities in 2011 if they were interested in a partnership and were told no – that resulted in the agreement they have now with the Rec Center Board. Supervisor Jeff Madlom says he can see the benefits it would bring, but wonders where the funding will come from.
The Supervisors will visit with the entire Rec Center Board before making any decision.
