Republican Candidate Emerges in First Congressional District

A Republican candidate has emerged in Iowa’s First Congressional District.

Ashley Hinson from Marion has filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to launch a race to challenge Democratic Iowa Congresswoman Abby Finkenauer of Dubuque.

Hinson was the morning anchor for KCRG-TV9 before running for the Iowa House in 2016. She was re-elected to the Iowa House in 2018 and served as the chair of the Transportation Committee this past legislative session.

The Congressional seat will be up for election again in 2020. Finkenauer is in her first term representing the First District after defeating Republican Congressman Rod Blum last November.

The first congressional district covers 20 northeast Iowa counties.
