Does your city have a back-up plan if something goes wrong with the water supply?
Water operators and city officials from Delaware and Buchanan counties gathered last Friday at the Manchester Fire Station to discuss emergency response plans.
City of Manchester Water Superintendent Chad Wulfekuhle says several scenarios can affect a city’s water supply.
The City of Manchester has a Source Water Protection Plan in place. Becky Ortman with the Iowa DNR says they’re a good example of a community being prepared if an emergency happens.
The DNR’s Source Water Protection Program is a voluntary program that looks at both short-term planning (such as an emergency response plan) and long-term planning (for example, how cities can prevent contaminants from coming into their water supply).
Ortman says they are encouraging all communities to look into implementing a Source Water Protection Plan.
