Donald Louis “Duck” Cashman, 84, of Manchester, formerly of Monti, passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2019, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. He was born on May 28, 1935, in Ryan, the son of Leo and Alice (McAreavy) Cashman, and attended school in Coggon.
Don held many jobs through the years. He drove school bus for Monti, hauled milk, and hauled hogs for Cleo Gentz as well as helping him on his farm. Don worked for Universal Engineers in Cedar Rapids until the factory sold, and he took early retirement. He also worked for Dolan farms in the spring and fall and took care of his parents. Don moved to Manchester in 2014, residing at the Good Neighbor Home for the last year and a half.
Don enjoyed bus trips, taking pictures, volunteering at the Camp Courageous garage sale, playing cards. He also collected antiques. In fact, one couldn’t visit Don without leaving with a new trinket. He was a loyal Democrat. Don followed the Chicago Cubs and Green Bay Packers and regularly read the Cedar Rapids Gazette. He looked forward to Saturday morning coffees, family reunions, and holiday gatherings.
Don was well known for his quick wit. He could always answer the question of how people were related. Those who knew Don always had a kind word to say about him.
Survivors include four nephews, Stephen (Ann) Kester of Grafton, Wisconsin, Daniel (Jami) Kester of Grain Valley, Missouri, David Kester of Decorah, and Tom Cashman; a niece, Darlene (Paul) Woodhouse of Decorah; ten great nieces and great nephews, Aaron Kester and Katherine Kester, Shaina Bollman and Ryan Kester, Leo Kester and Ming Kester and their mother, Pam Kester, Alicia (Alex) DeFrance and Joshua (special friend Katie Mathis) Woodhouse, Jennifer Cashman and Dallas Cashman, and his good friends, Kate (Eldon) Baragary of Winthrop.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Roland Cashman and Alice Cashman in infancy, Joseph (Mary) Cashman, and Doris (Darrell Kester, Harry S. Cole) Cole; and a nephew, Bob Cashman.
