Sprayer Boom Accident Leads to Fire at Rural Manchester Farm

Firefighters were called to a tractor fire and herbicide release at a farm south of Manchester on Tuesday night.

The Manchester Fire Department says the fire broke out at Joe Kelchen’s farm at 2456 190th Avenue shortly after 7 pm. A sprayer boom came in contact with an electrical line, leading to the tractor fire and herbicide release.

Fire Chief Mike Ryan says the power company’s safety equipment responded as planned. And all of the mixed herbicide was retained in the field.

No one was injured.

Firefighters were on the scene for about two hours, with assistance from Maquoketa Valley REC and the DNR.
