Authorities have released the name of the driver whose car collided with a train in Delaware County earlier this week.
The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office says 51-year old Michael Anderson of Naperville, Illinois, was traveling northbound on 245th Avenue from Highway 20 about a half mile east of Delaware on Monday morning. They say he was unfamiliar with the area and was paying attention to the GPS on his phone – not noticing the oncoming train at the crossing until it was too late to stop.
The Sheriff’s Office says Anderson tried crossing before train, but the train struck the left rear of his car.
The eastbound train was operated by engineer Kenneth Maas and conductor Jeff Carroll. It had sixty cars and was traveling about 35 miles per hour at the time.
Anderson suffered very minor injuries but refused treatment.
He was charged with failing to properly stop at a railroad crossing.
