The top-seeded North Linn Baseball team made program history last night at the State Tournament with a 3-0 victory over Des Moines Christian that propelled them into the first ever championship contest on Saturday afternoon at 1:30.
The first inning for the Lynx started promising as the Hilmer brother’s both got on but were quickly retired on a fantastic throw from right field throwing out Jake and a pitch out on a squeeze play left Austin hung up in a run down. Neither team got close to scoring until the 5th when the Lynx left a runner on second. Jake Hilmer was tremendous on the mound in what turned out to be his final pitching performance in a North Linn uniform as he threw too many pitches to be able to come back to pitch at all on Saturday. Hilmer almost threw a perfect game as he struck out 12 Lion batter and retired 19 of them before allowing a 1-out single in the top of the seventh inning. North Linn finally cracked the code to the runs category on the scoreboard in the sixth inning. Both Hilmer’s and Boge came in to score on hits by David Seber and Alex Sturbaum as 9 Lynx batter went to the plate that inning. Hilmer improved his pitching mark to 15-2 and the team moved to 40-5 and will face second-seeded Van Meter who beat West Sioux 3-0 in the other Class 2A semifinal.
Day number six started with Class 1A semi’s. Mason City Newman blanked Don Bosco 10-0 in 5 innings. The Alburnett Pirates advanced to their first ever title game in dramatic fashion as they won 4-3 on a walk-off suicide squeeze bunt with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 7th. Those two winners will meet for the 1A crown on Saturday morning at 11am.
Today 4 more semifinals will take place in 3A and 4A. At 11am. In 3A, Marion goes up against Cedar Rapids Xavier and at 1:30 Central DeWitt will battle Davenport Assumption. In 4A, Iowa City West matches up with Urbandale at 4:300 and th 7pm contest will be Johnston and West Des Moines Dowling.
