A local man who spent years helping others at Regional Medical Center was recently surprised with a special honor.
Mike Chapman of Manchester has been honored as a Hospital Hero.
The award from the Iowa Hospital Association is given annually to ten current or retired healthcare workers in the state. It recognizes those who have contributed courageously and selflessly to hospitals and their communities.
Regional Medical Center CEO Charlie Button says when it came time to nominate someone for the Hospital Hero award, they chose Mike right away. From picking up extra EMT shifts, to continuing the legacy of Greenie’s balloon animals, to singing “You Are My Sunshine” while wheeling a patient to dialysis – Mike has made a difference in people’s lives.
But the staff got a chance to see Mike last week when they surprised him with the news that he had been named a Hospital Hero. Around one hundred of his co-workers gathered in the hospital lobby with a big banner to congratulate him. Mike says he was humbled.
And being a part of the RMC family and being able to help patients these past three decades has meant the world to him.
Mike will be honored as a Hospital Hero on the statewide level at the Iowa Hospital Association Annual Meeting in Des Moines in October.
