Several Local Communities Awarded Grants to Plant Trees

Several local communities will get some help with planting trees.

Edgewood, Central City, Volga and Oelwein have all been awarded grants through Alliant Energy and Trees Forever’s “Branching Out” program.

Communities applied for grants up to five-thousand dollars to fund new trees.

Edgewood has been awarded $1,000 to help plant street trees and windbreaks, Central City has been awarded $1,000 to plant trees around the Hawkeye Area Council Boy Scout Camp dining hall, Volga received around $1,600 to plant trees at a public campground and Oelwein was awarded $5,000 to plant trees on city streets.

Some of the trees will help replace ones that needed to be removed because of the Emerald Ash Borer. Marshalltown will use their grant to replace trees lost in last year’s tornado.

Several communities planted their trees this spring, with many more plantings planned for the fall.
