Independence Man Charged with Arson and Burglary after Winthrop Break-in

An Independence man has been charged with arson and burglary after breaking into a Winthrop apartment early Sunday.
The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office says 21-year old Harry Federspiel broke into an apartment in the 300 block of 220th Street West around 3 am. They say he lit/set off multiple flammable and explosive devices in the basement.
When deputies arrived on the scene, they discovered a fire in the basement of the apartment, which they extinguished. The information provided by witnesses led authorities to Federspiel, who was located nearby and taken into custody without incident.
During a search warrant at Federspiel’s home, authorities found masks, black clothing, gloves and other items believed to be used in the crime.
He was charged with First Degree Arson and First Degree Burglary. The incident remains under investigation and further charges are pending.
