A fire broke out at a building in Epworth on Friday, destroying an apartment and damaging four businesses.
The Epworth Fire Department says they were called to a report a structure fire at Main Street and Center Avenue shortly before 11:30 am. The building, which houses The Pizza Factory, was found to smoke throughout the attic area, along with flames and heat in the upstairs apartment.
The building’s owners, Dave and Karen Koss, were on site.
The couple who lived in the apartment had just left and returned to find heavy smoke and flames atop of the stairwell in their apartment. The apartment suffered heavy heat and smoke damage and is considered a total loss. The couple had two cats, who did not survive.
The four businesses on the main floor had smoke damage and some minor water damage. Electricity was restored to The Pizza Factory so they could open for business – they were open by Friday night.
Farley Fire Department provided mutual aid. Firefighters were on the scene for about five hours Friday.
There is no estimate on the damage.
The cause of the fire has not been identified, although the Epworth Fire Department says it does not appear to be suspicious at this time. They believe the fire may have started in the upstairs’ bathroom.
