A state record was broken at Anamosa Pumpkinfest on Saturday.
People from all over bring their giant pumpkins to Pumpkinfest every year for the Ryan Norlin Giant Pumpkin Weigh-off. And this year, there was a new state record for Iowa’s largest pumpkin.
The winning pumpkin weighed in at 1,800.5 pounds. The gigantic gourd was entered by Dan Carlson and Marc Petersen from Clinton, Iowa, who won four thousand dollars for their first place pumpkin. They beat the previous state record – 1,662 pounds – set in 2007 by Don Young of Des Moines.
Organizer Nancy Norlin says the pumpkins nowadays are much bigger than they were when the event started in memory of her son thirty years ago.
Along with the pumpkin weigh-off, there were vendors and other activities up and down Main Street on Saturday. Unfortunately, due to the weather, the Pumpkinfest parade was called off, but Norlin says that doesn’t change the fact that Anamosa worked hard to put on another great event this year.
