Over Two Dozen Calves Die in Rural New Vienna Barn Fire

Over two dozen calves were lost in a barn fire early Wednesday morning near New Vienna.

New Vienna Fire Chief Mark Lukan tells KMCH that the fire broke out in a barn on the farm of Mark and Mary McAllister at 27334 North Bankston Road about five miles east of New Vienna.

When firefighters arrived, the barn was fully engulfed in flames. Thirty-five baby calves were lost in the blaze.

The barn is a total loss. There was also damage to the house and several other surrounding buildings.

Firefighters from Dyersville, Farley and Holy Cross assisted at the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
