HS Wrestling: West Delaware Opens Season At Home Against Waverly-Shell Rock

The West Delaware wrestling team will begin its state title defense tonight as the Hawks welcome in nationally ranked Waverly-Shell Rock into Seedorff Gymnasium. Although the defending class 2A state dual and tournament champions return five state place-winners and nine starters from last year’s team, 25th year head coach Jeff Voss says the motto of this year’s team is looking forward with the 95/5 rule:

The Hawks enter the season ranked number one after going 20-2 in duals meets last season and won all but two tournaments they competed in, and Voss has liked what he has seen in the practice room so far in the preseason:

Tonight’s opponent, the Go-Hawks from Waverly-Shell Rock are ranked 35th nationally by Intermat, and were the only team that beat the Hawks last season as they won the season opener 35-25 in Waverly, and 34-23 at the Battle of Waterloo. With facing such a good team in Waverly-Shell Rock to start the season, Voss says it will be a good test to see where the team is early in the season:

Tonight’s dual will get underway at 6:00 with the junior varsity, followed by varsity action which can be heard live on Mix 94.7 and KMCH.com AROUND 7:15pm with Roger Reed and Jamie Vaske.
