HS Wrestling: West Delaware Wins Battle Of Number Ones

In a battle of top ranked dual teams in their respective classes it was #1 in class 2A West Delaware getting a 42-27 win over #1 in class 3A Waverly-Shell Rock in Manchester last night. The Go-Hawks jumped out to a 6-0 lead after a pair of wins as top ranked in class 3A Brayden Wolf defeated top ranked in class 2A Wyatt Voelker 6-4 and Luke Walker edged junior Christian Nunley 6-3. Hawk junior Carson Petlon tied the dual at six with a fall in 1:20 before Waverly-Shell Rock scored back to back technical falls to give them a 10 point advantage, but the Hawks battled back with a 10-2 major decision from sophomore Blake Engel, and a 3:44 fall by senior Evan Woods tied the dual again at 16 all. At 132 pounds the Go-Hawks regained the lead with a fall from Aidan Riggins, but the Hawks got their first lead of the night when freshman Logan Peyton picked up a 20-6 major decision, and sophomore brother Jadyn Peyton decked Noah Heise with a fall in 2:53 giving West Delaware a four point lead. The Go-Hawks wouldn’t go away as Evan Yant had a 17-1 technical fall at 152 pounds, but it would be the last match they would win as the Hawks won the final three matches with a :27 fall from junior Cael Meyer, a 5:12 fall from Jared Voss, and an 11-2 major decision by senior Jack Neuhaus to give the Hawks the 42-27 win.

West Delaware head coach Jeff Voss was very pleased with the effort the kids gave in the dual despite being down several times throughout the night:

The Hawks won eight of the 14 matches picking up five falls and three major decisions. Voss says he likes that his team was able to win a dual against a great opponent like Waverly-Shell Rock, but also likes that they still have things to work on to get even better:

The 1-0 Hawks will now shift their attention to the individual tournament schedule, as tomorrow they will host the Bob Murphy Invitational inside the Seedorff Gymnasium. It will be an 11 team tournament and feature the West Delaware varsity wrestlers as well as a few junior varsity wrestlers that will have a team in the field which makes for a good opportunity for several wrestlers to face quality competition early in the season:

Hold-by-hold coverage of the Bob Murphy Invitational can be heard on KMCH starting at 11:00 with Roger Reed and Jamie Vaske.
