The first week of competition for area high school wrestlers wrapped up on Saturday, and here’s a recap of how area teams did.
In Manchester: West Delaware scored 308 points and had eight champions as they won the Bob Murphy Invitational. The Hawks had 11 wrestlers in the finals and got individual titles from freshman Carson Less at 106, sophomore Blake Engel at 120, senior Evan Woods at 126 pounds, freshman Logan Peyton at 138, junior Cael Meyer at 160 pounds, senior Jack Neuhaus at 182, sophomore Wyatt Voelker at 195 pounds, and junior Carson Petlon at heavyweight. The West Delaware JV also had a team in the tournament and finished in 5th place and had two wrestlers finish in 3rd place as freshman Carson Turnis at 106 pounds and sophomore Connor Funk at 138 both finished 3rd with their only losses coming to their varsity teammates who went on to win titles. In Cascade: Starmont went 5-0 at the Cascade duals on Friday night as they won pool A with wins over Cascade 42-33, MFL MarMac 42-40, and Ed-Co 48-35 and beat Bellevue 57-21 and Washington 52-24 in the championship pool. Ed-Co went 3-2 with wins over Cascade 33-30, Clayton Ridge 42-12, and Maquoketa Valley 42-30. Cascade went 2-3 with their wins coming over Maquoketa Valley 36-30 and Clayton Ridge 45-6, while Maquoketa Valley went 1-4 as they defeated Clayton Ridge 35-24. For complete results click HERE.
In Monticello: Monticello won their own Guilford Invitational as they finished with 99.5 point which was 14.5 points better than Sumner Fredericksburg. The Panthers had five champions in senior Alaina Sunlin at 106 pounds, sophomore Owen Ray at 120, junior Ethan Tallman at 126 pounds, junior Kain Luensman at 132, and senior Mason Rueter at heavyweight. In Williamsburg: East Buchanan went 1-4 at the Williamsburg Raider Duals. The Bucs lost to CP-U, Davenport Assumption, and Eddyville-Blakesburg in pool meet, they lost to Van Meter in the opening dual of bracket meets before beating Mediapolis 42-30 in the 7th place dual. In Independence: Independence finished 7th in their own two day 33 team tournament finishing with 215 points as Simley high school out of Minnesota won the tournament with 424 points. The Mustangs were led by senior Cole Davis who finished in 3rd place at 182 pounds. For complete results click HERE.
In Fairbank: North Linn finished in 4th place and Anamosa finished in 9th at the Chris Davis Invite at Wapsie Valley high school. North Linn senior Heath Moyer led the Lynx as he had two falls and a major decision on his way to the 138 pound title. Anamosa was led by junior Nathan Keating who had a technical fall, a fall, and a major decision as he won the title at 170 pounds. For complete results click HERE.
In Cedar Falls: Beckman totaled 47 points and finished in 13th at the Keith Young Invitational at Cedar Falls high school as Waverly-Shell Rock ran away with the team title over 2nd place Bettendorf. Senior Evan Wulfekuhle went 4-1 and won three straight matches after losing in the quarterfinals to battle back to a 5th place finish at 182 pounds. For complete results click HERE.
In South Wayne, WI: Western Dubuque won the Black Hawk Invitational at Black Hawk high school in South Wayne Wisconsin. The Bobcats had five champions on the day and finished ahead of Darlington/Blackhawk with 279.5 team points. Individual champions for the the Bobcats were sophomore Tanner Gaul at 113 pounds, and seniors Jared Cordes at 138, Tony Lyon at 160 pounds, Jake Hosch at 182, and Jonathan Savolt at heavyweight.
