HS Wrestling: West Delaware Sweeps Double Dual On Senior Night

Seven West Delaware seniors had their last regular season dual inside the Seedorff Gymnasium last night as the Hawks swept Maquoketa and Marion on senior night. All six seniors who wrestled won by fall in at least one match as Mason Gillihan, Sam Lyness, and Ben Petlon all picked up falls in their JV matches while Luke Farmer, Jack Neuhaus, and Evan Woods all got at least one fall in varsity action. Zach Fisher who suffered a spinal chord injury two years ago was mat side for the Hawks’ two dual wins.

In the first dual the Hawks won 13 of the 14 matches as they had six falls and a forfeit to jump out to a 42-0 lead before the first featured match-up of the night which saw West Delaware’s Jared Voss who is ranked 5th fall to 2nd ranked Abe Michel. Voss scored the first takedown but two reversals and an escape by Michel gave him a 5-2 win and put the Cardinals on the board. The second featured match saw 2nd ranked Taven Rich for Maquoketa score the first takedown on 3rd ranked Carson Petlon but Petlon battled back and scored a reversal and an escape before adding a 3rd period takedown to win the match 5-2. The Hawks finished the dual with back to back falls for a total of eight in the dual meet as they won to 71-3.

In the second dual against Marion the Hawks added 11 more falls and won 12 matches on their way to a 70-6 win. In the two duals the Hawks recorded 64 takedowns and only gave up three, and West Delaware head coach Jeff Voss was very pleased with the intensity his team showed on their feet:

The Hawks will now turn their attention to the Jerry Eckenrod Bobcat Invitational at Benton Community high school tournament tomorrow which features 51 ranked wrestlers from all three classes. Voss says the atmosphere of this tournament provides a state tournament feel:

Live coverage of West Delaware, Independence, and North Linn from the Jerry Eckenrod Invitational will get underway around 10:00 am on KMCH.com with Roger Reed and Jamie Vaske, with coverage moving to KMCH after high school basketball.
