Voters will be heading to the polls in two Dubuque County cities today.
The City of Farley is holding a special election to fill a vacancy on their city council. Corey Birkel and Nick Mescher are the two candidates running for the position. The At-Large vacancy was created when longtime city council member Joyce Jarding resigned in October, citing family matters.
And the City of Peosta is holding a special election to fill a vacancy for mayor. In October, former mayor Larry Mescher quit in an email to council members after a contentious meeting. Two days later, he asked the council to rescind his resignation, but the members declined. The council initially opted to appoint a new mayor, but changed course after over 130 residents signed a petition demanding an election. Mescher is running for his vacant seat, along with candidates James Merten and Jack Kalb.
Polls will be open today from 7 am to 8 pm.
