There was finally a full slate of wrestling this past Saturday as several area teams wrestled in their first tournaments of the new year.
In Waverly: Several area girls took part in the second annual IWCOA Girls State Tournament at Waverly-Shell Rock high school. Girls from Anamosa, East Buchanan, Western Dubuque, Independence, Monticello, and Starmont competed in the field of over 350 wrestlers. Starmont senior Kari German recorded four falls on her way to the championship match where she lost by fall to Tateum Park of Davenport North to finish as the state runner up at 113 pounds. Anamosa freshman Emily Waters led the Blue Raiders finishing 8th at 126 pounds, while freshman Keeley Kehrli finished in 5th place at 152 pounds for East Buchanan. Independence had two state runner-ups as senior Kenzie Fischels recorded three wins on her way to the 170 pound finals before losing by fall in the finals to Kendal Clark of Humbolt, and freshman Rachel Eddy also had three wins on her way to the championship match at 195 pounds where she was pinned by Millie Peach of Iowa Valley. Monticello senior Alaina Sunlin reached the semifinals at 106 pounds before suffering her first loss and battled back for a 3rd place finish. For complete results click HERE.
In Center Point: West Delaware went 4-0 at the Center Point-Urbana duals, as the Hawks went 52-3 in matches and in the 36 matches they wrestled and won 35 of those wins were bonus point wins as they defeated Mediapolis 72-3, Wahlert 83-0, Oelwein 79-0, and CP-U 70-6. In Anamosa: Anamosa finished 2nd in their own Denny Christenson wrestling tournament as they finished just eight points behind Columbus Community. The Blue Raiders had three individual champions as Aaron Casey at 120, Nathan Keating at 170, and Connor Anderson at heavyweight all won titles. Starmont finished in 4th place as they had five runner-up finishers in Lane German at 106 pounds, Dawson Zobac at 120, Skyler Jaster at 182 pounds, Louis Hamlett at 220, and Ricky Garcia at heavyweight. In Denver: Beckman finished in 4th place at the Denver duals going 3-1 on the day. The Blazers defeated Garner-Hayfield 48-33, Mid-Prairie 45-36, and North Fayette Valley 51-24 with their lone loss coming to New Hampton/Turkey Valley 36-34. For complete results click HERE.
In Alburnett: Monticello finished in 4th place at the Alburnett Invitational as the Panthers had four runner-up finishes as Owen Ray at 120, Kain Luensman at 138 pounds, Bo Kramer at 152, and heavyweight Mason Rueter all finished 2nd. Cascade finished 6th as they were led by Aidan Noonan at 126 pounds and Carson Staner at 132 both won titles for the Cougars. For complete results click HERE.
In Winthrop: Ed-Co went 2-3 at Steinkamp duals hosted by East Buchanan as the Vikings defeated the host Buccaneers 47-36 and Jesup 42-36, with their losses coming to Sumner-Fredericksburg, Waterloo West, and New London. East Buchanan went 1-4 with their one win coming over Jesup 45-33.
In Clinton: Western Dubuque finished in 8th place at the Bob Lueders Invitational. The Bobcats were led by Carter Kluesner who finished in 4th place at 170 pounds. For complete results click HERE.
In Ankeny: Independence finished 2nd at the Dave Ewing duals at Ankeny high school as they went 4-1. The Mustangs wins came over Ottumwa 55-24, Marshalltown 54-16, Bondurant-Farrar 36-33, and Spencer 48-24, with their only loss coming to the host team Ankeny 40-34. For complete results click HERE.
In Letts: Maquoketa Valley finished in 10th place at the Louisa Muscatine Invitational as Tim Harmon led the Wildcats by winning a title at 170 pounds. For complete results click HERE.
In Greene: North Linn finished 4th at the Doug Trees Bearcat Invitational at North Butler high school. The Lynx had three champions on the day at Cael Bridgewater at 113 pounds, Heath Moyer at 138, and Nathan Rechkemmer at 195 pounds all claimed titles. For complete results click HERE.
