Over a dozen non-profits have been awarded grants from the Greater Delaware County Community Foundation.
The McGee Barr Grants utilize money left to the foundation by Garrett McGee to assist those with financial needs in the county. The grants are available only to non-profit groups who will use the funds to benefit Delaware County residents whose financial situation qualifies them as poor.
This year’s McGee Barr Grants were presented to the Clothing Closet, Delaware County Food Bank, Franklin Street Underground, Helping Services for Youth and Families, Lutheran Services of Iowa, Operation Santa Claus, Riverview Center, Second Helpings, West Delaware Back to School Fair, New Life Assembly, Northeast Iowa Food Bank, First Presbyterian Church and the Delaware County Energy District. The grants ranged from a couple hundred dollars to several thousand dollars, with the Delaware County Food Bank receiving the largest grant of $6,000.
Harlo Coon Grants are also given to organizations that help Delaware County’s elderly, following the example set by Harlo Coon. This year’s Harlo Coon Grant recipient of $1750 is the Good Neighbor Society.
