The Manchester Police Department is once again participating in the I-PLEDGE program.
It’s a partnership with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division to educate local retailers and enforce Iowa’s tobacco, alternative nicotine and vapor product laws.
I-PLEDGE places emphasis on retailer training. Clerks who successfully complete an online training course and then pass an exam will become I-PLEDGE certified. This allows a retail establishment to use an affirmative defense against a civil penalty if the certified clerk makes an illegal sale.
Officers will be conducting compliance checks on local retailers as part of the program.
Manchester Police Chief Jim Hauschild says since his department started participating again in the I-PLEDGE program in 2014, they have had no instances of retailers violating the law by selling tobacco to a minor.
