Congresswoman Abby Finkenauer is calling for accessibility improvements at the Independence Post Office.
The post office, which is located at 200 2nd Avenue Southeast in Independence, sits on a steep hill and a staircase is the only way to get into the front entrance – making it difficult for those with disabilities or physical impairments to enter the building.
Over the past year, Congresswoman Finkenauer says her office has heard from dozens of residents in Independence and the surrounding community with concerns about the post office and the need for a ramp at the entrance. She noted that last year, a local woman fell trying to enter the post office and had to be transported by ambulance.
Independence Mayor Bonita Davis says the accessibility of the post office is a major concern and one that she has worked on for years.
Three ABA accessibility complaints have been filed again the post office. The Congresswoman’s office has also filed a complaint on behalf of her constituents.
On Tuesday, Finkenauer sent a letter to the U.S. Access Board expressing her concerns and urging the board to help in addressing the problem. Finkenauer says a ramp and possibly other safety measures are needed at the Independence Post Office.
