HS BASKETBALL: Girls State Day 2 Recap/Day 3 Preview/Boys 4A Substate Scores

Class 4A Boys Basketball Substate games were held last night:

Cedar Falls 53, Dubuque, Hempstead 44
Davenport North 50, Dubuque Senior 48
Iowa City West 55, Pleasant Valley 36

In day two of the High School Girls State Basketball tournament:

The Cascade Cougars improved their record to 26-0 tying the most wins in program history matching the 2013-14 squad. The Cougars beat Denver 41-28 in their Class 2A quarterfinal to begin 2A play at the tourney last night. Cougar senior Nicole McDermott led the way with 19 points, Ally Hoffman had 8, 7 for Jordan Simon, Abby Welter 4 and Skylar Dolphin 3. Cascade who is making their 9th tournament appearance won a first round contest for the 8th time. The Cougars advance to the semifinals on Friday morning at 10am and will face Osage who beat West Branch in the nightcap 50-43.

The day started with the final 3A quarterfinal as Sioux City Bishop Heelan defeated Des Moines Christian by 50-38. In 4A play, Clear Creek-Amana lost to #1 North Scott 58-38. Center Point-Urbana came back to beat Waverly-Shell Rock 45-41. Glenwood and Lewis Central were also winners.

Today Class 2A and 1A quarterfinals. At 11:45 North Linn faces Western Christian, our coverage will start around 11:30. Sports Director Jon Swisher and Nate Sanderson will have the call.
