By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:
Day 5 of the Girls State Basketball Tournament yesterday started with Class 2A semifinals. Top-ranked Cascade was upset by fourth-seeded Osage 46-32 as the Cougars were not able to slow down the Green Devils offense and couldn’t get their shots to fall consistently. Cascade ended with a mark of 26-1 and say goodbye to four outstanding seniors who helped the program to a 97-9 record in the past 4 seasons including the first championship in 2018. Those seniors include all-time leading scorer Nicole McDermott, Skylar Dolphin, Jordan Simon and Abby Welter.
The 3rd-ranked North Linn pulled off an incredible upset of the 2-seed West Hancock after being down by 13 in the second quarter and 11 at halftime. The Lynx outscored the Eagles 40-14 in the second half as they made 35 of 43 free throws en route to the 61-46 victory. North Linn advances on to their second championship contest and first in Girls hoops since 2015, looking for their first ever title. The Lynx will face Osage at 5pm this evening for the 2A crown. All our coverage will begin around 4:45pm with Sports Director Jon Swisher and Nate Sanderson.
In the 5A title contest last night Johnston pulled off a minor upset of Waukee 69-65. In 3A, Sioux City Bishop Heelan took down North Polk 53-46.
The finals get started with Class 4A this afternoon and day number 6 will conclude with the 1A game tonight.
