Day 2 Recap: Monticello Falls in first game at State Tourney in 60 years

The second day of the High School Boys Basketball State Tournament in Des Moines opened up with the last Class 2A quarterfinal. The Monticello Panthers making their third trip at the State Tournament but first since 1960 ran into high percentage shooting against their River Valley Conference foe Camanche. The Indians won 67-52 after leading the whole game with no lead changes and no ties. The Panthers fell behind early as the Indians blitzed the nets with three 3-pointers in the first period as they led 20-7 after one. The Panthers put up a fight and outscored Camanche 16-11 in the 2nd quarter to trail by 8 at the break. Monti was able to cut it to 5 right out of the gates in the 3rd period but the Indians struck back and extended their lead to a game high 18 points early in the 4th. The Panthers ended their history making campaign with a 21-3 mark, tying them for the third best record in program history with the 2015-16 squad behind the teams from 2011-12 and 1959-60 . They say goodbye to four seniors, Devin Kraus, Ethan Martensen, Jeff Carlson and Cade Folken. Camanche improved to 22-3 and will have a semifinal date with top-seeded Boyden-Hull at 6:30pm this evening. That’s the first of the 2A field, the second will feature our final coverage area team alive in the North Linn Lynx the third seed hooking up with the 2-seed Treynor with game time of 8:15pm scheduled, Sports Director Jon Swisher and Brian Wheatley will take the air around 8:00.
