Two people died in a drowning on the Turkey River on Monday afternoon.
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office says they received a report shortly after 3:30 pm of two people in distress who had gone over the dam on the river near Clermont.
Upon arriving, deputies were directed to the area of Mill and River Street near the dam. Emergency crews attempted rescuing the two people, but despite their lifesaving efforts, both victims were pronounced dead after arriving at Palmer Hospital in West Union.
The victims have been identified as 64-year old Sharon Kahn and 44-year old Vicki Hodges, both of West Union.
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Clermont Fire and EMS., Elgin Fire and EMS., Tristate Ambulance, Gundersen Air Ambulance, the Iowa DNR and the Iowa State Patrol.
