A correctional captain was assaulted by an inmate at the Anamosa State Penitentiary on Tuesday morning.
The Iowa Department of Corrections says the captain was working in a unit when an inmate approached him from behind and struck him multiple times with a pointed piece of aluminum. Other staff in the area immediately came to the captain’s aide and were able to help restrain the inmate. While responding to the incident, a counselor also was injured when she was kicked in the ankle.
Both staff members were taken to the hospital for their injuries. The captain has since been released to return to duty.
The inmate did not suffer any major injuries.
The incident remains under investigation.
