The man who was the first to lead the Western Dubuque School District was laid to rest on Thursday.
Wayne Drexler died last Friday at the age of 91.
Drexler grew up in Farley and started his teaching career in 1950. He became Dubuque County Superintendent in 1957, where he inherited over 100 rural schools. After school districts were reorganized in Iowa, the Western Dubuque School District was founded in 1960 and Drexler became the district’s first superintendent. Under his leadership, the Western Dubuque School District grew from 360 students its first year of existence to near 4,000 students within ten years.
Drexler retired in 1991. And in 1996, the Western Dubuque School Board honored Drexler by renaming the Farley elementary and middle schools to Drexler Elementary and Middle School.
