A home intruder was killed in Palo early Sunday.
The Linn County Sheriff’s Office says they received numerous 911 calls from different homeowners in the area of Sage and Ridgeview Drives around 3 am, reporting that a male was trying to break into their homes.
Deputies arrived in the area a few minutes later, followed by another 911 call from a home in the 2700 block of Ridgeview Drive. The caller stated a male had broken into their home – first breaking out a window of a child’s bedroom and then throwing a flowerpot through a large pane of glass on the front door – before entering the home and threatening the occupants. Fearing for the safety of his family, the homeowner, Jordan Schulte, shot the intruder.
Deputies quickly arrived at the home, secured the scene and began CPR on the intruder, who was later pronounced dead.
Authorities have identified the intruder as 40-year old Kevin Harris of Cedar Rapids. They believe he approached homes in the area after crashing his vehicle into a parked pickup truck near the intersection of Ridgeview Drive and Timber Road in Palo.
The investigation is ongoing.
