Independence House Damaged by Fire

A house in Independence was heavily damaged by a fire on Sunday afternoon.

The Independence Fire Department says they were dispatched to 207 3rd Street Northeast around 4 pm.

When arriving at the scene, fire crews found heavy fire showing from the front and back of the house. They say one adult, two kids and a dog were alerted by a neighbor and were able to get out safely.

The fire was under control in about an hour and crews began overhaul to look for fire extension.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The name of the homeowners has not been released. The family is being assisted by the Red Cross and Salvation Army of Buchanan County.
