A driver was able to escape from his car when it started on fire on a Buchanan County highway on Friday.
It happened in the 1300 block of Jackson Avenue (Highway 150) south of Hazleton around 4 pm. The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office says Andrew Hawkins of Independence was traveling southbound when he noticed smoke and flames starting to come from the trunk area of his car. Authorities say he was able to stop his car along the shoulder of the road and get out before the fire engulfed the rear portion of the vehicle.
The Sheriff’s Office and Hazleton Fire Department both responded to the scene.
Hawkins was not hurt. The car was a total loss.
At this time, authorities believe the fire was started by a jump pack that was in the trunk of the car under some clothing.
