Linn County Inmate Dies Following Medical Emergency

A Linn County inmate has died following a medical emergency on Wednesday.

The Linn County Sheriff’s Office says Linn County Correctional Center staff were notified by inmates of a medical emergency involving another inmate in a dorm-style cellblock on the 2nd floor of the jail. Deputies and medical staff responded to the cellblock and found an inmate who was not breathing and had no pulse. Another inmate had initially attempted CPR efforts before jail staff took over medical care.

Paramedics arrived and transported the inmate to Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

The inmate, 40-year old Ryan Bailey of Marion, had been booked into the Correctional Center that morning after he was taken into custody as a hold for the Lary Nelson Center. When he had arrived at the jail, medical staff examined him for a potential knee injury after an alleged scuffle with arresting officers. But they didn’t notice any obvious injuries and he declined any further medical treatment.

In reviewing cellblock video, Sheriff’s Office investigators found no apparent cause for Bailey’s medical emergency. An autopsy has been order and the incident remains under investigation.
