An Independence home was damaged by a fire on Friday afternoon.
The Independence Fire Department says they were called to 812 1st Street East shortly before 4 pm. Crews found heavy flames coming from the back of the house. The fire was brought under control within 45 minutes.
The house, garage and a camper all sustained damage from the fire.
Fire officials say the owner was home at the time and was able to get herself and a small child out on their own. Crews were able to rescue one of the family’s dogs, but were not able to save a second dog. The name of the owner has not been released.
The Red Cross was contacted to assist the family.
Independence Fire was assisted on the scene by Jesup Fire, Independence Police, Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office and Independence Light and Power.
