Independence Police Arrest Man for Vandalizing Downtown

Independence Police have arrested a man for vandalizing the downtown area Saturday night.

Several businesses sustained broken doors, shattered windows and other various acts of vandalism. 34-year old Matthew Wilkinson of Independence has been arrested in connection to the case.

Wilkinson had walked into the Dollar General on Sunday night, demanding the clerk give him cigarettes without any payment. He then grabbed the cigarette display case, tipping it over, grabbing cigarettes and leaving the store. Officers tracked down Wilkinson, but he refused to comply with law enforcement orders to stop and tried leaving the area. He was later taken into custody and transported to the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office Jail.

Wilkinson faces numerous charges, including possessing methamphetamine, Third Degree Theft, Interference with Official Acts, Desecration of the American flag and multiple counts of Criminal Mischief.

The Independence Police Department would like to thank all the individuals and business owners for their swift action in helping and assisting the officers during this investigation. They’d also like to give a shout out to the local Spahn & Rose team for opening on Sunday afternoon to help the business owners get lumber and to help board up their windows and doors due to the vandalism.
