Delaware County Conservation has constructed a new river access at the Quaker Mill Dam Area north of Manchester.
This gives the public a new access for canoes and kayaks to the Maquoketa River Water Trail.
The Quaker Mill Dam Area was donated to Delaware County Conservation by the late Willard Hawker and Marcia Hawker, with a grant from the Iowa DNR Water Trails Program helping make the project a reality.
Work involved grading, shaping and installing concrete slats north of the old dam site that was removed. The new ramp will provide access from the parking lot to the water’s edge.
With this addition to the Maquoketa River Water Trail, which starts below Backbone State Park and ends at Baileys Ford Park, canoers and kayakers coming from upstream can exit at this location or they can enter the river at that new access and paddle downstream three miles to the Whitewater Park in Manchester.
