HS Wrestling: Top Ranked Hawks Down Go-Hawks

In Waverly last night it was a match-up between two of the state’s top wrestling teams as top ranked in class 2A West Delaware took down 2nd ranked in class 3A Waverly-Shell Rock 55-18. The defending state dual champion Hawks were dominant throughout the dual winning 11 of 14 matches and recorded bonus points in eight of the matches with seven falls and one major decision. The Hawk wrestlers were dominant on their feet as they only gave up takedowns in five of the matches, something that 26th year head coach Jeff Voss was pleased to see in the first night of competition:

With the win West Delaware moves to 1-0 on the season and with the win last night have taken the last three dual meets from the Go-Hawks, and although he was happy with the how they wrestled Voss saw some things they need to work on in the early stages of the season:

The Hawks will now turn their attention to tomorrow as they will host the Bob Murphy Invitational inside the Seedorff Gymnasium which will feature both the West Delaware varsity and JV teams, Maquoketa Valley, along with five other schools. Voss says after the dual meet against Waverly-Shell Rock his team needs to get back into the tournament mentality:

All the coverage of the Bob Murphy Invitational with Roger Reed and Jamie Vaske starting at 11:00 can be seen on the KMCH live video stream on our website at KMCH.com.
