HS Wrestling: West Delaware Begins New Year With Double Dual Wins

The West Delaware wrestling team kicked off the second half of their season with two WaMaC Conference wins as they took down Maquoketa 79-0 and Marion 83-0. Every match the Hawks wrestled in the two duals they scored bonus points as they received five forfeits against Maquoketa but picked up six falls, two major decisions, and one technical fall. The Hawks scored 41 takedowns against the Cardinals while not allowing one, and West Delaware head coach Jeff Voss says he liked seeing his team wrestle at a high pace, as in the two duals they scored 76 takedowns and gave up just two:

West Delaware senior Jared Voss reached a milestone against Maquoketa as he scored seven takedowns before pinning Ben Thines in 3:16 earning career win number 100, and Dad Jeff says it’s a milestone that he was pretty excited about:

Tomorrow the Hawks along with Independence and North Linn will wrestle at one of the toughest tournaments in the state as they head to Benton Community for the Jerry Eckenrod Invitational. This year’s field includes eight teams ranked in the top ten of their respective classes, and 61 ranked individuals with 14 of those being top ranked at their weight class. Voss says tomorrow isn’t necessarily about winning the tournament, but using the good competition to continue to get better individually:

Coverage of the Jerry Eckenrod Invitational gets underway around 11:00 am on KMCH with Roger Reed and Annette Lenz.
