HS Wrestling: West Delaware Retains Del-Buc Trophy

The traveling trophy between the West Delaware and Independence wrestling teams will remain in the West Delaware trophy case for another year as the Hawks downed the Mustangs 45-21 to retain the Del-Buc trophy. The dual started with a forfeit to Hawk senior Carson Petlon to give them an early 6-0 lead, but Independence came right back with a fall from Kaden Kremer at 106 pounds to even the dual. West Delaware took a 9-6 lead in the dual with a 7-4 win by Carson Less over Kale Weiland, but the Mustangs got back to back wins including a fall from Luke Johnson to give them a 15-9 lead. At 132 pounds top ranked Brandon O’Brien of Independence had built an 18-4 third period lead on Hawk senior Tyger Vaske, when Vaske rolled through catching O’Brien on his back for a fall tying the meet at 15 all. The Mustangs had an 18-15 lead through the half way point but the Hawks would go on to win six out of the final seven matches, scoring bonus points in all six of those wins. West Delaware head coach Jeff Voss continues to be pleased with the mentality that his team has showed during the final weeks of the season:

The Hawks had 12 seniors wrestle their final home dual of the regular season and Voss says this is a very special group having so many guys stick it out for all four years:

Both the Hawks and Mustangs will be in action tomorrow at the WaMaC tournament, a conference Voss believes is one of the best in the state:

Coverage of the WaMaC tournament can be heard starting around 10:00 on 94.7 with Roger Reed and Jamie Vaske.
