The West Delaware wrestling team and cheerleaders wrapped up their season’s on Monday night with the annual awards banquet inside the Hanson Auditorium. The Hawks’ impressive season was capped off in February with a perfect 19-0 dual meet record winning the class 2A state dual tournament, then three days later they claimed the class 2A individual tournament title. Along with going undefeated in dual meet the Hawks also won every tournament they wrestled at, including the Jerry Eckenrod which had eight ranked teams over 60 ranked wrestlers, and eight state champions from last month’s state tournament. In the state duals the Hawks had wins over Sergeant Bluff-Luton, Independence, and Crestwood and they outscored their opponents 180-39 in those three duals. In the traditional tournament they scored 150 points which was 54 points better than runner-up Osage, and had all 11 of their state qualifiers bring home medals.
As a team they were awarded the Excellence in Academic Achievement Award by having a combined GPA of 3.11 while seniors Kieran Monaghan, Carson Petlon, Tyger Vaske, and Jared Voss, and juniors Kyle Cole, Ethan Hoefer, Jadyn Peyton, TJ Soppe, and Wyatt Voelker all earned Academic All-Conference honors by having a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Individual awards were presented at the banquet as well and this year’s Lee Logan Courage award was given to senior Robinson Martinez who went out for wrestling for the first time this season. The John and Dorothy Sill most improved award went to senior Reily Dolan who went from a 12-29 varsity record in his freshman season to a 32-8 record in his senior campaign and finished 5th at this year’s state tournament. The Rob Hatfield coaches award went to seniors Kieran Monaghan, Christian Nunley, Ethan Proper, and Tyger Vaske. This year’s captains were also awarded to Jared Voss, Jadyn Peyton, and Wyatt Voelker
The Jeremy Shover Guts Club Awards was given out to wrestlers who attended every practice both mandatory and optional practices, and although it was modified a little bit this season with the year that it was there was still a record 39 wrestlers who accomplished this feat which tops the mark of 27 set by the 2018-19 team. The Guts club members were Brayden Maury, Carson Less, Max Anderson, Carson Turnis, Owen Neuhaus, Blake Engel, Conner Turnis, Reily Dolan, Tyger Vaske, TJ Soppe, Garrison Gillihan, Mason Roling, Stavely Maury, Carter Klein, Ethan Hoefer, Logan Peyton, Jadyn Peyton, Brady Schaul, Cruz Timmerman, Carson Petlon, Isaac Fettkether, Kyle Cole, Ethan Proper, Zach O’Rear, Jared Voss, Noah Felton, Jack Smith, Landon Rausch, Cael Meyer, Austin Fessler, Will Ward, Sawyer Falck, Logan Africa, Cash Hauser, Wyatt Willey, Wyatt Voelker, Kieran Monaghan, Grant Northburg, and Christian Nunley.
The wrestling cheerleaders were awarded the Distinguished Academic Achievement award with a team GPA of 3.44 and Camryn Borchardt and Alexis McTaggart were Academic All-Conference recipients. Individual awards were presented to Harper Blommers for the Spirit Award, while the Leader Award went to Alexis McTaggart.
