Delaware County Helps Fill Backpacks for Homeless

Volunteers were busy filling backpacks at the Delaware County courthouse on Friday.

Shampoo, toothbrushes and flashlights were among the items going to homeless shelters across eastern Iowa. It was organized by the Mental Health Region that Delaware County is a part of, funded by money from the CARES Act.

Delaware County Supervisor Shirley Helmrichs:

As she mentioned, several students from West Delaware were there helping too on behalf of DelCo Best – a program recently started at the school giving students the opportunity to help their communities in various ways. Senior Eric Salow was busy filling backpacks Friday afternoon and told KMCH it feels good to give back.

They’ll have another day of work coming up next week – they’re aiming for a total of two thousand backpacks.
