Man Charged in Sgt. Smith’s Death Pleads Not Guilty

The man charged with killing Iowa State Patrol Sergeant Jim Smith has pleaded not guilty.

Our news partner KCRG reports 41-year old Michael Lang filed a written arraignment and plea of not guilty on Monday.

Lang is accused of fatally shooting Sgt. Smith of Independence on April 9th. Lang had a confrontation with authorities after he barricaded himself inside his Grundy Center home. A Grundy Center officer had initially pulled him over on suspicion of driving while barred.

Lang is facing charges of First-Degree Murder, Attempt to Commit Murder and Assault On A Peace Officer.
